The General Council of the INE imposed fines on political parties for 78 million 971 thousand 301 pesos for irregularities in their campaign expenses related to the electoral process in which the governorships of six states were renewed. The most sanctioned parties are those that formed the Va por México alliance (PAN, PRI and PRD), which account for 51.5% of the total amount of fines imposed. On the list follows Movimiento Ciudadano, which by itself reached 20.3% of the fines.Alone, Acción Nacional was the most fined party, with 20 million 830 thousand 180 pesos, followed by MC, with 16 million 75 thousand 546. The PRI had a sanction of 15 million 564 thousand 852;Morena, with 6 million 690 thousand 124;PRD, with 4 million 585 thousand 942;PT, with 3 million 900 thousand 216;and the PVEM of 2 million 290 thousand 498.The missing resources in the equation correspond to local parties and independent candidates. If the parties are agglomerated by their coalitions, the Va por México alliance is found to have been fined 40.7 million pesos, which represents 51.5% of the total sanctions;meanwhile, the alliance Together We Make History (Morena, PVEM and PT) adds 12.76 million pesos in fines, 16% of the total. In fact, MC, alone, adds up to 20.3% of the total fines imposed by the INE, so that it ranks second among the most fined entities, after the Va por México alliance.According to the projects, the biggest irregularities in campaign spending by the parties were committed in Durango, Quintana Roo and Hidalgo. In Durango, the Technical Control Unit of the INE detected that the alliance Va por Durango (PAN-PRI-PRD) incurred in irregularities for 51.4 million pesos, for which it plans to impose a fine of 12.5 million. In that state, the candidate of said alliance, Esteban Villegas, triumphed. In Quintana Roo, the PAN-PRD alliance committed irregularities for 17.6 million pesos, which earned it a fine of 4.8 million. In Tamaulipas, the PAN-PRI-PRD alliance was awarded a fine of 13 million pesos, followed by Morena, who was fined 1 million 72 thousand pesos. The Citizen Movement committed the greatest irregularities in Hidalgo and Oaxaca. In the first entity, the INE will impose a fine of 5.6 million pesos;and in the second state another of 4.8 million.Morena was the most punished party in Aguascalientes, where a fine of 1.5 million pesos will be imposed, followed by PT and MC, who each earned a penalty of 1.2 million.President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has fled Sri Lanka on a military plane, amid a wave of massive protests as a result of the acute economic crisis plaguing the country. The Asian nation's air force confirmed Wednesday that Rajapaksa, 73, moved to the Maldives with his wife and two security agents. The president remained in hiding after a mob stormed the presidential residence on Saturday. He had promised to resign from the position this Wednesday.A source told the BBC that he does not plan to stay in the Maldives, a group of islands in the Indian Ocean, and that he intends to travel to another country. The flight of the president puts Sri Lanka at risk of falling into a power vacuum, at a time when he needs a functioning government to try to get out of the dire financial situation in which he finds himself.According to the country's constitution, it is the prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, who should lead the country if the president resigns. But Wickremesinghe is also unpopular and a group of protesters managed to break into his office on Wednesday.According to BBC journalist Tessa Wong, who is at the scene, the grounds of the ministerial office were invaded by a group of visibly happy protesters, many of them grabbing what they found in their path. Many shouted phrases of joy from the balconies, after confronting the armed policemen who were at the gates of the compound.Last Saturday, protesters set fire to his private residence, but neither he nor his family were there. The prime minister had also said that he would resign to make way for a unity government, but without giving a precise date.Following the flight of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Wickremesinghe declared a state of emergency across the country due to the protests. In addition, he declared a curfew in the Western Province, which includes the capital Colombo.Demonstrators have been in the streets for months protesting the consequences of the serious financial crisis that the country is going through.Sri Lanka currently does not have access to foreign currencies such as the dollar or the euro to pay for its imports. These include food, medicine and fuel.In an attempt to tackle the crisis, the authorities implemented a ban on the sale of gasoline and diesel to private consumers, making the country the first to take this measure since the 1970s.This caused the closure of schools in Sri Lanka. It also forced the authorities to ask the nation's 22 million people to work from home, at a time when inflation reaches 30%.Reporting from Colombo for BBC NewsThis is a fall from grace for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who was for so long such an important political figure in Sri Lanka.Few expected things to end this way.As a former defense chief, Rajapaksa oversaw military operations in the controversial war against the Tamil Tiger rebels that ended in 2009.They accuse him of human rights abuses during that war and also of attacking dissidents, but he has repeatedly denied these accusations.Rajapaksa's family has dominated Sri Lankan politics for two decades and, with strong backing from the Sinhalese Buddhist majority, Gotabaya became president in 2019.His flight represents a victory for protesters who took to the streets to vent their anger at mismanagement of the economy and rising cost of living.Remember that you
