TERESA FRANCO |In a place in the Region of Murcia, whose name is Archena, a battle is being waged in the war against machismo.We need reinforcements.This article is a call to fight for freedom, justice and equality.An association called "The other look" had the idea of ​​honoring relevant women in their town.They contacted Noelia Muriana, a painter and sculptor from Murcia, to design the drawings of the women who would be recognized.Noelia got to work enthusiastic and tireless.She put aside many jobs because she believed in this project.She put all the enthusiasm and passion that only artistic souls know how to do.She investigated her lives, she got to know the women she would put on Archena's wall much better, and they became her friends.Friends protect and care for each other.Women are who we are today because others were who they were.We are, in part, the result of their decisions, their ways of facing reality.What we do, our example today, will serve the same for those who come after.That wall was painted by hundreds of anonymous people and was inaugurated by Carmen Calvo on November 5, 2021. That wall was born as a wall of hope, of justice, but today it is one of those walls classified as "walls of shame."Its author, Noelia Muriana, is very clear: if the Archena City Council does not remove the row of garbage containers that have been strategically placed to prevent the honored women from being seen, it will cover it in black and everything will end.These referent women, who with their lives have made it possible for ours to be better today, cannot be trapped between garbage and indignity.They are being victims of the vilest violence of our time: institutional violence.The call is that we send a letter to the City Council of Archena so that the containers and the parking of the vehicles pass, officially, to the opposite sidewalk where there is no painted wall and they do not bother the neighborhood.Which women have been thrown away?To which women can we not allow them to do this out of respect, for justice, for dignity?To Hypatia of Alexandria, a mathematician, astronomer and philosopher who led the Neoplatonic School of Alexandria.People from all over the world traveled to attend his classes in the public square.She was brutally murdered on March 8, 415 by a mob of Christians, for refusing to betray her scientific knowledge to convert to Christianity, despite the fact that she was tolerant of all religions.Her contemporary Socrates of Constantinople described her end.Returning to her house, they took her out of her car, dragged her to her church, Cesáreo de Ella, where they stripped her naked and murdered her, beating her and cutting her with tiles.After tearing her apart, they took her shattered limbs to a place called Cinaron and burned them.The next woman recognized on the Archena wall is Clara Campoamor Rodríguez, a lawyer, politician and writer committed to women's rights.In 1931 she was a deputy in Congress.She Campoamor defended the vote for women and other measures such as divorce.She ended up exiled by the Franco dictatorship until her death.Victoria Kent Siano is another of the recognized women.She was also a lawyer and politician and director of prisons.She was the first woman to intervene in a Court of War and enter the Bar Association.She contributed to the drafting of the 1931 Constitution defending equal pay between men and women.María Segarra Salcedo was a poet and teacher in La Unión.She was the first woman to obtain the title of chemical expert in Spain.She established her own mineral analysis laboratory in which Kounglutina, an iron cement, was patented.Carmen Conde Abellán, essayist, playwright, poet and teacher born in Cartagena, is recognized on this wall for being the first woman to enter the Royal Academy of Language (RAE) in 1979. She was part of the Generation of 27, however it does not appear in the textbooks.Frida Kahlo, a Mexican painter, challenged gender norms and the limitations that society imposes on women.She represented in her paintings unknown experiences such as abortion, menstruation, breastfeeding, infertility or sexual desire.Her place on this wall is more than justified.Concepción Arenal Ponte was a lawyer and writer.She is recognized as the mother of feminism in Spain.In 1841 she dressed as a man to be able to attend law classes when women were still not allowed to enter the University.She was a reference in Europe in social policies.She also has recognition of her on Archena's wall.Oliva de Sabuco, Spanish of the Renaissance period, philosopher and pioneer in psychosomatic medicine.She was recognized in her time, but her ideas were adopted by others as her own and centuries later she was denied her talent.She wrote "New Philosophy of the Nature of Man, not known or achieved by the great ancient philosophers, which improves Human Life and Health".Piedad de la Cierva Viudes, a scientist from Murcia, received her doctorate in chemistry and traveled to Denmark to study artificial radiation.Her plan to create an institute of atomic physics in Spain was cut short by the Civil War.What did not truncate that war?She made great advances in optics.With them also, Gloria Fuertes García, the poet who loved everything.She founded the group "Verses with skirts" to give visibility to creative women.She turned her motorcycle into a traveling library, bringing literature to children who had no access to books.Nina Simone was a jazz, blues, and soul composer, pianist, and singer.Her activism for the rights of people of color put women at the center.Her songs became anthems of the civil rights movement.Rigoberta Menchú Tum was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992.
