Three supermarket chains — Aldi, Morrisons and Tesco, will test a digital deposit return system in the U.K. to promote the recycling of beverage containers, according to a report in The Grocer.
The three-month trial will include cartons and glass, and will begin in Welshpool, Powys, Wales in September.
Shoppers will scan products before they are recycled in curbside home collections, but the test will also feature automated return points in Tesco.
Shoppers will be offered a 10-pence (10 cents) reward for recycling containers which they will claim using a mobile app.
The trial will include 800 SKUs at all participating retailers, including water, soft drinks and ambient products, but not multipacks and alcohol.
